Intellectual Bohemian, the Podcast, called “Intellectual Bohemian Speaks”

The aim is to deliver a weekly show on things happening in my life. These should cover:

  • My adventures and encounters whilst teaching,
  • My views on “life, the universe and everything”,
  • Things happening in my life and family,
  • Christianity, specifically, related to homilies, services and assemblies that I give in school, and other issues and reflections relating to Christianity.

I hope the first show should be up and running in the next week. This should also coincide with the start of a new term in school, and the launch of the FlatPlanet Wiki and Project.

Hope to be “speaking” to you soon

The Quarter Finals of the UEFA Champions League are now completed with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and AC Milan, making it through to the Semi Finals.

For the first time there will be three English teams in the semis and there is a repeat of the Chelsea vs Liverpool semifinal of two years ago that Liverpool won on their way to winning the trophy. Liverpool’s victory two years ago, backed up by Arsenal’s runner’s up last year and the 3 out of 4 in the semis this year are leading some commentators to marvel at the supremacy of the English Premiership and how it is finally showing it’s dominance and value.

I am worried about this. I admit that Manchester United’s 8-3, Liverpool’s 4-0, and Chelsea’s 3-2 aggregate wins look dominating, but put into perspective they don’t look as great. Roma only qualified for the Champions league due to the Italian match fixing scandal, Valencia are amongst the 5 clubs in La Liga who are doing their best to not win the title, and PSV Eindhoven are in a free fall in Domestic and European Competitions in a largely uncompetitive Dutch league.

I add to this the fact that for all its supposed greatness the Premiership only contributed three players to the World Cup Final, (Gallas, Makele, and Henry); and had none in the winning Italian squad. It can also be said that the players that actually starred and did well at the World Cup Finals as a whole were those who played outside of the Premiership.

So is the English Premiership the top national league in Europe … No. The players that play there are overworked, and often overpaid. Nevertheless, the three sides that fill the top three places in the English Premiership are in the last four of the UEFA Champions League and they do have a great chance to make history. Due to either fortune, timing … or maybe as many loyal fans think … destiny.

Let’s hope for a repeat of the final of 2 years ago in Istanbul … it’s still possible. One semi final is exactly the same, and the final could easily go that way too!

Mal Teddy Bear, originally uploaded by NeilD.

Who needs a big expensive Teddy Bear when you have a pet cat that does this?

Mal, our youngest cat, has recently started taking up this position on the bed when Hazel sleeps or rests. It is really great to see and he seems to enjoy the affection. Unfortunately, as he is about 2 years old and still quite young, he gets a little bored after a while and starts “playing” with Hazel’s outstretched hand. He has very sharp claws and teeth which has resulted in Hazel’s hand and arm being quite scarred and scratched.

Suppose that is the price to pay for having a Mal Teddy Bear.

Btw he is very definitely Hazel’s teddy bear, as he doesn’t come into this position if I am on the bed, and moves away if I try to join them.

Happy Easter to all.

I had a frantic and demanding last few weeks of term in school. This left me particularly drained physically and emotionally and thus the break in blogging. However, I did manage to achieve a fair few things in that time.

I did sing with the band in school and performed “Before I Fall to Pieces” by Razorlight at the Spring Term Concert. It went really well and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I had my hair and goatee shaved off by some pupils to raise money for charity. This happened the day after the concert and was quite the hit in school. I am now clean shaven and without a goatee for the first time in seven years! I am now getting used to not having facial hair and may just keep it for a while.

We had the school Holy Week Service in which I gave the homily and I asked the band and music group to perform “Lean on me”. Their performance was excellent and helped me get the message of my homily across really well. That was to turn to Jesus to help us carry out burdens and crosses.

And finally we have had the Easter Holidays. I went to the usual church services, the morning mass on Easter Sunday was one of the best I have been to in years. I also visited both London Zoo, and the London Wetlands Centre, the photos from these can be found on my Flikr page.

I am now putting the final touches to my joint class project with Simon’s class in Canada. This can be found at the Flatplanet wikispace and on the Flatplanetproject blog.

I hope to start blogging regularly now and will be keeping you posted on how the joint class project goes.

These last few days have been slightly overwhelming. I have received some very fortunate news which could mean very good things for me; unfortunately, I just can’t say what it is yet!

But, a few things struck me. As a Catholic and, what I would call a fervent believer, I have a strong faith. This faith means that I trust that things will turn out for the best and that I am being looked after. Over the last few years this trust and faith has been tested greatly by events in both Hazel’s and my own health, but I have stood firm.

The events of this week have been more than mere coincidence in my opinion. There are aspects of them that make the odds very slim and the way things have worked out proves that Hazel and myself are being looked after. This is, by no means, the first time these type of events have happened to us as a family, and the list goes back right to the start of our relationship. We have even gone so far as to comment that if we wrote a book or made a film of our lives, it wouldn’t sell as people would find the events to unbelievable to be true.

Nevertheless it always amazes me how overwhelming it is when these types of things happen. Even when you have faith in them and even when they have happened to you before. This feeling overcomes you both spiritually and emotionally and makes you profoundly happy.

And just confirms to an even greater degree my own religious faith and makes me feel lucky and grateful to be leading the life I lead.

I recently received a comment from Zorkmid on my about me about the concept of being an Intellectual Bohemian. The comment was placed on my about me and so is not readily accessible by everyone so I thought I share it with you.

Zorkmid said:

Hi!

You have a great blog. I like the concept of “intellectual bohemianism” and enjoyed reading your site posts.

I am from Northern California where a lot of people think they are bohemian, (Sonoma County even has a newspaper called The Bohemian,) but for the most part, they are more “flakey hippie” than “bohemian. We have a high population of people who enjoy practicing a laid-back-lifestyle. Not that that is bad in itself, but people mistake being a laid-back with being a “bohemian.”

Many people who call themselves bohemian are being different for the sake of fitting in with everyone else. They identify with the groovy, natural, farmer’s market culture, and so they adopt the “lifestyle” and dress of a typical Northern Californian. However, I don’t really think that is being bohemian in the true sense.

Being bohemian means making intelligent choices and not conforming for your own reasons: People might label you as being unconventional as a result, but it is not being unconventional as the goal.

It is the difference between wearing a tie-dye shirt because it looks cool, and making your own tie-dye shirt because you want to express yourself artistically. A hippy wears the shirt because it looks groovy. A bohemian makes the shirt because they want to create something beautiful for themselves. A hippy drives a diesel Volvo because it’s cool to be environmental. A Bohemian might make their own biodiesel–partly because it is environmental–partly because they want to see if they can.

Being bohemian means using your intelligence, and teaching yourself about things you find interesting in the world. Maybe it involves being frugal, but not for the purpose of being anti-capitalist. More for the purpose of choosing not to be wasteful. It means expressing yourself creatively and artistically. Bohemians desire to live richly by appreciating the beauty that is around us.

Anyway, I would like to know your definition of what it means to be an Intellectual Bohemian. The concept is fascinating.

Best wishes, from one free-spirit to another,

Z

I briefly covered this topic in my first post on this blog back in December, but it was very brief and hardly anybody read the blog back then.

In the post I use a definition of Bohemian of “someone who does not conform to the cultural norms or thoughts of society”, and Intellectual would be “someone of a higher than average intelligence.” I use these two in my original post by saying:

The idea for Intellectual Bohemian comes from an accurate description of me as someone who has a higher than average intellect and who doesn’t automatically conform to the thinking of the majority, in political, religious and social views, and in my pastimes.

In a nutshell that is me. I try to think for myself in forming opinions on things rather than listening to the media or the masses. This goes for a number of areas including politics, morality, religion, and relaxation.

In politics I see myself as a “floating voter” rather than having an allegiance to any political party or any political issue.
In morality I usually go against the common practice of doing only what will be good or feel good to me as can be seen in British Society, and hold on to traditional ideas of charity, monogamy, and putting other peoples needs ahead of my own.
In religion I am a liberal Catholic who shares most of the views of the Catholic Church, but not because of being told to but due to thinking and reasoning my opinion out.
In my relaxation and spare time I tend to do what I enjoy but do so in a thoughtful way.

For example whilst I watch the NFL and the English Premiership I am usually analysing tactics and formations as much as I am watching the game, in gaming I do play games but the games I choose I try to stick to my morals on, and try to keep my number of games to a minimum. This means I attempt to sell or exchange games rather than ending up with lots of games I don’t play too often.

I hope that this clears up what I mean by an Intellectual Bohemian and how I feel it applies in my case. Feel free to comment if there are any other suggestions fore what I have not covered here or any questions.

For a while now I have had reservations about TV shows with phone in votes, shows like X-Factor, American Idol, Big Brother, Dancing on Ice etc. My concerns and reservations have been around since the first few series of Pop Idol when there was a big “conspiracy theory” over the person who one not being the one the most people voted for, and leaks from TV sources about who was going out each week before the show.

My biggest concern was that in the UK most of the votes cast for these shows are to premium rate numbers costing the voter money, the prices range from 10p per vote up to 50p per vote. If these votes were made on the assumption that the vote would impact the final results and then the final results were actually predetermined then this was constitute fraud in my opinion.

I raised this concern with a few friends but no one seemed that bothered, I even commented on AskMetafilter about it, but the issue seemed largely ignored or not thought about by people. Until these last few weeks that is! There has been a scandal around UK TV recently as it has come to light that a day time TV show was preselecting the winners for a competition whilst still encouraging people to call in on a premium rate telephone number. There have been a few other revelations since this as well. It was announced yesterday that all major programmes with premium rate competitions will suspend these competitions whilst an investigation is completed to see if these are actually fair, this includes programmes like X Factor and Dancing on Ice.

I may still be proven wrong in my fears, but at least after a year or so of wondering, something is finally happening about it.

In my post about Mika’s song “Grace Kelly” I mentioned a funny story about a pupil in my class. What I failed to mention was that I had used that song and story to lead a short prayer meeting in school.

We have prayer meetings every Friday morning in school. They last about five minutes and an equal number of staff and pupils attend, usually about twenty in total. The meetings are led each week by either a member of staff or a pupil who talks briefly about a topic and then leads a short prayer/reflection on it.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, I led a prayer meeting on that song and that story, and earlier on this week I was approached by a pupil who was at the meeting. He said that he hadn’t really heard the song before the meeting but that he had quite liked it and so had been listening to it afterwards. On one occasion he had found the song on a music TV channel and was watching the video, and he was really surprised to find that the little girl seen with Mika in the video was in fact his younger cousin. Apparently, he doesn’t talk to them much so didn’t know that this had happened until he and his family saw the video.

There you go, thanks to a prayer meeting and a lively pupil; I am now within in six degrees of separation of Mika! How cool is that?
